Gone Too Soon

The news out of Canada is that the honest mare Alexis Hall has died after a training mile Tuesday morning. A heart attack is the early prognosis. I'm sure Keith Oliver must be heart broken after the news because he got along with the mare from the first time he drove her. My condolences to her connections. Her stats:

What is the slowest race any of you old timers remember at a parimutuel race ? Today's times still astound me. I remember the crowd at Roosevelt giving Adios Butler a standing ovation for going a 1:59 and change mile.
The slowest race I remember was a rainy, nasty night at Yonkers in the early 60's. A trot went in about 2:16 +. I remember this well, as I bet on a front runner who caved in during the stretch run in this walk-a-thon. Don't remember horse or...

Mine is Deadly Breeze. Driven and trained by Dean Collins in Chicago. DeHow about stories about your favorite horse that was not a champion?

an was the groom for Rambling Willie back in the days.

Deadly Breeze was a good condition horse.

In April of 87 he got good. He won a conditioned race on a saturday night at Balmoral. Paid around $9.00.
Came back the next Sat. Night and won the W/O $10,000. Again paid around $9.00.

worst weather ever

Weather wise, what was the worst night you ever went to the track.

One day in late January at Hawthorne on a Saturday in I think '81 or 82. they ran a double header. The temperature was -3 at post time for the afternoon card at 1:00pm. Between the races at 6:00pm the local news said the temperature was -16. They STILL RAN. Every race went. One was a 2 horse race between Bicentenial Star (Ron Marsh) and Satin Sooty (Steve Spriggs). I just had a very nice woman PM me and inquire about SuperLou. This filly raced quite some time ago, and produced Shane T Hanover, among others. Her and her preteen daughters came down from Maine to visit Florida, and wound up at Ben White Raceway. After all these years, she and her daughters remember asking Johnny if they could see her. John was gracious enough to have her led out of the stall so they could pet her and visit a bit. She commented on how gracious everybody was, and it remains...

The other thread seems to be about horses-How about a thread linking us with people of our past we are curious about? I will start with a few....Where is Jeff Mallett of Dragons Lair fame?? Heard he was with Gurfien several years back-How about Bob Stiles? Mack Hayman? Marvin Maker? We can use this thread to find assistants, fellow grooms, and owners of years gone by, via info we provide. Any clues to these? Or do you have a few of your own you are curious about?

Lets post some memories of what used to happen at the Meadowlands that is no longer happening. Example: I remember when post was 8:00, time for everybody to come to the races, or, Open Trots on Monday nights, or, anyone who was anybody shipped horses there.....or Thursday night feature was N/W of 4 or 200k life...lets hear your stuff.

Anyone out ther have any good stories about this great training track that is sadly now defunct?? Used to be THE place to winter train.....great mile track with cushion. See any good miles there? Lets hear about the nicest trotter you had personal experience with. I was lucky with assignment to Ledgend Hanover, who won Hambletonian after 2yr old of year honors, but I feel that the most talented trotter I dealt with was the first foal out of a mare named Superlou. His name was Shane T Hanover and he was a sale topper that year as a yearling, and really took awhile to get serious about his game. Here is one guy I never really got to know, but I remember he was quite handy in his curcuit several years back. Can anyone comment on Lucien Fontaine? I dont see ANY post her about him-did I miss something along the way??

1980 Meadowlands Pace Eliminations

I had asked the Meadowlands if they could put on You Tube the 1980 Meadowlands Pace elimination where Niatross finished fourth. To me, Niatross put on one of the greatest efforts of all time to finish fourth. Unfortunately, the Meadowlands does not have that race available.

Does anyone know where (if) it can be found?

Who would you vote for as the alll time Iron Horse. My vote goes for Rambling Willie. Considering the company he raced all those seaons with his soundness issues he had, I would say he is the Iron Horse.

In the post 1976 era, I want to add Michel Lachance to the pantheon of immortal drivers. After checking his accomplishments they stand up very well to Pierce and JC. Several Hambos, 5 Jugs!!!. He's won all the classics and at 59 years old he's having a fine season especially on Gurfein's trotters. If you meet him in person he has the body of a 25 year old. He's in incredible shape.

Who do you think the greatest all time trotter is?

I would vote for Super Bowl. This is based on his abilities on the track and his being a moden day foundation sire.
