Quality of training has reached the bottom of the barrel in Michigan. You can get a trainer for $20.00 a day. All the true horsemen have moved on, or retired, or died. Most of the so called trainers in Michigan only know the end of a needle. If they can't inject something there lost. |

The $20@day days are long gone, at least for anyone who's doing it rite ! In the NON- metropolitan areas you can expect to pay about $30-$35 @ day rate not including many of the extras. Typicly extras include blacksmith, vet, equipt., padocks and ect.... If you are going to have a horse stabled at a farm or a Metro area track (NY,NJ,CHi,IL ) you can expect to pay at least $45-60@day. With the way feed, hay, beddining and fuel have been skyrocketing I'm sure many of these prices will be going up soon. |

So what kind of trainer can you get? I see too many trainers out there. Good and Bad I'm guessing. Anyone have anyone in mind. I'm sure alot of people can recommend some. I want to get a horse. I want to listen to the people. I can call Ellen Harvey and ask her to point me in the right direction. Usually you get the scoop from word of mouth. Good and bad recommendations. I want a trainer that will take good care of my horse when I get one. Like a babysitter thousands around and real good ones are hard to find. Email me if you don't think it's right to list any on the site. Thanks, Ricky |

First, let me address the comment on Michigan trainers. Most of the trainers are honest decent people that care about the health and well being of the horses in their care. As in every other state that has harness racing you have a few bad apples but that doesn't mean that the rest are. I don't know what state you are looking for a trainer in but all the states have the good and bad. You can pay the big bucks and send them to a big stable that will get them to the races but it has been my experiencce that if the horse is not stakes quality they get glossed over. The smaller stables have more quality time to spend with the horses because they don't have as many and you won't have to pay as much because you are not paying for the name. In my area there are a lot of us small trainers. We have anywhere from 3 to as many as 10 horses. Yes, we are from Michigan. Yes, we have to work twice as hard for half the money but we do it because we love it . Look at the track record of some of us. We have pretty good percentages. Also if you want more hands on or interaction with the horse and the trainer the small stable is the way to go. We don't have a lot of owners so you get a lot more attention. And don't rule out the Michigan trainer. The majority of us have integrity and honestly. We put the welfare of the horse above all else. After all that horse is our bread and butter. |

I'm also curious what an average training bill in the NJ/PA/NY area is? Training plus stall rent = ? per month.

$1200 - $1500? | #7 | ||

That's very low, a horse raing at a track like Saratoga or Freehold is between $1500 and $2000, while a horse racing at the Meadowlands, Chester, and
Pocono is $3000 - $4000.

Yes, that's the whole bill including vet. It can sometimes climb to a bit over $4000 but not too often.

How much is a typical training bill in MI. Also does anyone know how much would it cost to train your own horse and stable at the track in MI.

dellpc ... your best bet probably would be to contact Brett Boyd the Pres of your own MHHA. He owns and trains his own stable so should be able to give you
some advice.

If you do all the work yourself? | #12 | ||

While PDQ's suggestion to talk to Brett is a good idea, I got a ballpark figure of $20 a day if you do all the work. Good luck dellpc, some of the
Michigan trainers will be leaving at the of July if nothing is changed as far as race dates.
